The Sailing Club Split was founded with the goal of promoting sailing as a sport and way of life. Our mission is to provide top-notch conditions for training and competitions, as well as to encourage the development of young sailors. Our vision is to become a recognizable club on the international sailing scene and contribute to the development of sailing as a sport in Croatia.
The beginning of the second half of the 20th century marked a growing interest in sports among the youth of Split. During these years, the desire to engage in sports grew as the hardships of war were being forgotten. Split was home to many prominent sports clubs such as Hajduk, Jadran, Gusar, and Labud. In this context, a few enthusiasts, employees of the Split shipyard, decided to establish yet another sailing club.
Under the leadership of Petar Vicić, Vinko Jelasku, and Neven Duplančić, the Maritime Shipping Section of the People’s Technique was founded in 1947 at the shipyard. With the material and organizational support of the shipyard, the section built the first sailboat, Šljuka, and then two sailboats of the national L-5 class. This initiative laid the foundation for the establishment of the club.
On October 18, 1950, the founding assembly of the Sailing Club Split was held. Petar Ozretić was elected president, and Petar Vicić became secretary. The club found a temporary home at the Labud Sailing Club, which offered hospitality and allowed the club’s boats to be moored at its marina. This marked an important step in the development of sailing in Split.
However, already in 1951, thanks to the enthusiasm of the club’s first members and founders, and with the support of the “Vicko Krstulović” Shipyard, today’s Brodosplit, the construction of a sports marina in Špinut began, with a project designed by graduate engineer Tonko Radić. The first sailboats entered the newly constructed marina on September 10, 1953, with a grand ceremony and a carefully planned accompanying program, which was enhanced by the ensemble of the Split Croatian National Theatre. That year, the society changed its name to the Maritime-Sports Society “Vicko Krstulović.
With the construction of the sports marina in Špinut in 1953, the club gained its own space for further development. The clubhouse, built in 1962, became the central gathering point for members and the organization of events. The sailboat hangar, built in 1969, provided space for the storage and maintenance of the fleet.
The club’s fleet was continuously expanded with sailboats of national and international classes, including R 5.5, Dragon, Zvijezda, Šljuka, and L-5, as well as Olympic class sailboats. This infrastructure enabled the club members to compete in local, national, and international regattas.
Over time, the club’s members achieved increasing success in competitions. Initially, they participated with modest results, but soon they began winning numerous national championships and first places in international regattas. The club had representatives at the Balkan Championships, European Championships, and other international competitions.
One of the club’s greatest successes was its participation in the Olympic Games. The first Olympic representatives of the club were brothers Ivan and Toni Bulaja, who competed in the 470 class at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Elena Vorobeva continued this tradition, securing the Olympic standard for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in the Laser Radial class, becoming the club’s third representative at the Olympic Games. Elena also qualified for the Paris 2024 Olympics, where she achieved the best result in Croatian women’s sailing in Olympic classes, finishing in 6th place.
Our sports marina in Špinut, affectionately known as Lučica, represents the heart of the club, providing a safe and sheltered mooring for the club members’ sailboats. The marina is equipped with all the necessary facilities for boat maintenance, including water and electricity connections, as well as security systems. The marina’s location offers easy access to the sea and is ideal for starting sailing adventures.
The club’s clubhouse, whose construction began in 1962, is the central gathering place for our members. The clubhouse is equipped with all the necessary facilities for organizing meetings, workshops, and social events. Inside the clubhouse, there is a meeting space for the club’s management, as well as a conference hall used for educational workshops and seminars. The clubhouse also includes areas for relaxation and socializing, making it a key place for building a sense of community among the club’s members.
The goal is to attract members through active participation, encouraging them to socialize and spend time at the club, making it a true gathering place.
Built in 1969, our sailboat hangar provides ideal conditions for storing and maintaining the fleet. The hangar is equipped with modern tools for repairs and maintenance of sailboats, including cranes, tool storage, and workbenches. The space in the hangar offers protection for the sailboats from weather conditions, ensuring the durability and readiness of the fleet for competitions. The hangar is also a place where our members can work on their sailboats, exchange experiences and knowledge, and prepare for regattas.
