From September 4 to 7, the Open Croatian Championship for the Optimist class in fleet sailing will be held, organized by the Split Sailing Club.
After a break last year, the Optimist class cadet fleet returns to Lučica for another in a series of successfully organized national championships for this class.
Last year we hosted two national championships for juniors and seniors in ILCA 4 and ILCA 6 classes, while the Optimists sailed their fleet championship in Mali Lošinj. This year, clubs are returning to everyone’s favorite JK Split.
In April, we hosted 80 Optimists at the first selective regatta of the class, and now at the national championship, we expect twice as many competitors.
Between 140 and 160 sailors are expected to participate in the regatta, and the final number and names of participants will be known after the registrations close on August 29.
Since the championship is open, all male and female sailors who meet the participation conditions can apply, regardless of their ranking on the qualification lists.
In the meantime, Optimists are expecting seasonal preparations in Betina, while on the last weekend of August, the national championship for younger cadets up to 12 years of age is scheduled in the neighboring JK Špinut.
The arrival of competitors is expected from the beginning of the competitive week, i.e., from September 1, while the official part begins on September 3, when measurements and registration of sailors are scheduled.
The competition format will be determined by the decision of the Race Committee, chaired by national judge Josip Jospić.
Whether qualification and final races will be sailed, and how many competitors we will see on the plateau in front of the club hangar and on the regatta field in front of Split – remains to be seen.
